A BENEFIT FOR BABETTE

Juice Magazine hosted a once-in-a-lifetime group art show/fundraiser on October 20, 2011 at the Juice Magazine headquarters on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and we would like to thank everyone that donated, attended, volunteered and participated. The event was a huge success!

The Juice Magazine Surf Skate Culture Collection was a Benefit for Babette & Jeff Ho. Babette has been diagnosed with late stage cancer, and all proceeds from the event will go to benefit Babette to defray medical expenses. Jeff Ho and Babette have been pillars of the surf/skate community for over three decades. This show was more than a benefit. It was a chance for all of us to show how the surf/skate community can rally and support two of our most distinguished participants.

HB SKATEPARK UPDATE!!

We get hit up everyday with questions about the “proposed” skatepark in HB. Supposedly there is going to be a skatepark near Golden West College.

We hear one week that it is going to happen and then the next week that whole operation is getting shut down so its really hard to get a clear answer as to what is going on…To me it seems like the city is doing everything in its power to shut it down, especially with the $150,000 Vans must pay for the environmental review before the park is even built!

“Vans Skate Park Grinds On In H.B.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH – The city will spend $60,000 for an environmental report for the proposed Vans skate park on Center Avenue near Gothard Street.

The city’s portion of the cost comes from an agreement between the Huntington Beach Union High School District and the city, in which the district agreed to give $75,000 toward development of a skate park after removal of the Huntington Beach skate park.

The city has had an exclusive negotiation agreement with Vans since January and had to extend the agreement until March 2012, when the environmental assessment is expected to be finished.

If the project is approved but Vans doesn’t follow through with construction, the company will have to cover the full cost of the environmental review.

Vans will pay approximately $150,000 for the environmental review, which will look at possible effects of increased traffic and noise. The City Council approved its share of the costs at a recent meeting.

Problems wouldn’t necessarily stem from day-to-day activity at the park, but from major events, Deputy City Manager Robert Hall said.

The skate park is anticipated to hold about 15 events per year, some attracting up to 2,500 people

The proposed skate park would include a 12,000-square-foot skate plaza, a 15,000-square-foot elevated skate pool, a walking area and a 2,000-square-foot skate shop on the 2.7-acre lot. Proposed hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The lease was opposed in January by Center Partners LLC, which previously leased the land for more than 20 years and planned to build affordable-housing units. However, all plans submitted by Center Partners to the city were rejected because they did not meet the city’s criteria and the housing units have been planned elsewhere, Councilwoman Connie Boardman said.

Hall said he has not heard recently from Center Partners.

Many local skateboarders are eager to see a new skate park.

“I think it would be good for the kids,” said Trevor Shrader, 17. “Skating places like Westminster and Garden Grove aren’t always the best scene for them. It’s easy to get into trouble.”
